Malena Dayen is an Argentinian opera singer and stage director based in New York City.
Praised by the New York Times as “Outstanding” for her performance at the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall of the world premiere of The Blizzard Voices (Paul Moravec), Malena made her debut as Cherubino at the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro and has performed the roles of Mercedes (Carmen), Musico (Manon Lescaut), Zweite Magd (Elektra) and Myrtale (Thaïs) at the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo as well as Carmen with the Natchez Opera Festival, the Festival d’Art Vocal de Montreal and the New York Lyric Opera Theatre.
Malena recently directed interactive, site specific productions of Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires and Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Bare Opera in New York City.
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Malena is a Spanish music and tango specialist, performing this repertoire with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and in venues such as Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, and the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. She sang the title role in Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires with Opera Naples in Florida and with Opera Hispanica in New York City. She is the lead singer with New Aires Tango since 2010.
Ms. Dayen has concertized extensively with the Oratorio Society of New York, touring Hungary, Italy, Brazil and Uruguay and has sang numerous concerts with the Fairfield County Chorale under the baton of David Rosenmeyer, her husband.
Malena is a member of Moving Star, a vocal improvisation ensemble based at Carnegie Hall and a collaborative artist at the Weill Music Institute, working with the Lullaby project. She is the voice teacher at the UN International School, and she is faculty at Bard College Conservatory Prep Division and the New York Lyric Oper Theatre Summer Programs, where she directed productions of Hansel and Gretel and Le Nozze di Figaro.
